Mr. Kalnins practices primarily in the areas of corporate, tax and estate planning with an emphasis in the family office market.  He is experienced in the creation and implementation of advanced estate planning techniques for high net-worth clients including, but not limited to, trusts, charitable remainder trusts, intentionally defective grantor trusts, grantor retained annuity trusts, private foundations, charitable organizations and the formation and operation of family limited liability companies and the family office structure.

In addition, Mr. Kalnins is actively involved in the Firm’s asset protection practice that consists in part of the planning and implementation of domestic and offshore entities and trusts.  Mr. Kalnins is a licensed attorney in Illinois and Wisconsin, and he is currently a member of the State Bar of Illinois, the general bar for the Northern Federal District Court of Illinois, and the United States Tax Court, as well as the State Bar of Wisconsin.  His litigation experience greatly compliments the Firm’s tax controversy work at all stages of audit, appeals and Tax Court proceedings.

Mr. Kalnins was chosen to represent our firm at the Family Wealth Alliance’s 40 minus Leadership Summit on March 4-5, 2009, in Boston, Massachusetts, hosted by State Street Corporation.  This event represents a family office/family wealth industry first, acknowledging the significant contributions made by professionals 40 years of age or under from a select number of firms that represent a 360-degree view of this robust space.

Mr. Kalnins’ experience in each of the aforementioned practice areas has enabled him to proactively identify and capitalize on business and personal planning opportunities for the benefit of Firm clients.

Mr. Kalnins obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, his Juris Doctorate degree from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Michigan, and his Master of Law in Taxation degree (LL.M. in Tax) from DePaul University College of Law in Chicago, Illinois.
